Uttarakhand CM Dhami Calls Off Kanwar Yatra

Government cites concerns of third wave of Covid-19 and detection of Delta Three variant in the state

Uttarakhand CM Dhami has decided to call off the Kanwar Yatra this year. CM Pushkar Singh Dhami held a meeting with top officials of the state and it was thought right to call of the Kanwwar Yatra on concerns of Covid-19, its possible third wave and detection of Delta Three variant in the state.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami while addressing the media said, “We decided to cancel the yatra, according topmost priority to human life… A lot of discussions were held on the issue over the last few days. Our officials held talks with neighbouring states. The outcome of this exercise is that in view of the pandemic and with a new variant being detected in the state, we do not want Haridwar to be the centre of the pandemic… People’s lives are our priority. We can’t play with that… we won’t take any chances.”

Lakhs and lakhs of devotees of Lord Shiva pour into the state during the from other parts of the country and reach Haridwar to take Ganga Jal and return to their respective cities to offer it to Lord Shiva during the month of Shraavana.

Officials said that last time when Kanwar Yatra was held in 2019, approximately 3.5 crore Kanwarias came into the hill state of Uttarakhand to fetch Ganga Jal from Haridwar.
