Somanathan succeeds Rajiv Gauba, a 1982 batch IAS officer who had an unprecedented five-year term as Cabinet Secretary

TV Somanathan, a 1987 batch Indian Administrative Services (IAS) officer, has been appointed as the new Cabinet Secretary of India for a two-year tenure. He succeeds Rajiv Gauba, a 1982 batch IAS officer, who held the position for an unprecedented five years.

Before this appointment, Somanathan served as the Finance Secretary of India. He has also held significant roles in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) as an Additional Secretary and Joint Secretary. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved his appointment as an officer on special duty in the cabinet secretariat until he officially assumes the role of Cabinet Secretary.
