Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL) Chairman-cum-Managing Director Manoj Kumar Agarwal inspected mining operations in the Katras area and directed officials to maximise machinery utilisation, expedite dewatering of waterlogged mine patches and strengthen operational preparedness to accelerate coal production.
The inspection forms part of BCCL’s ongoing efforts to address operational bottlenecks, improve productivity and ensure adequate coal supplies to meet the country’s growing energy requirements.
During his visit to the AKWMC project in the Katras area, Agarwal reviewed mining operations, water extraction arrangements and measures required to enhance production across departmental and hired opencast patches.

CMD Directs Maximum Utilisation of Mining Equipment
At AKWMC Colliery, Agarwal reviewed the availability and deployment of departmental machinery and instructed the Regional General Manager (Katras), General Manager (Excavation) and other mine officials to take immediate steps to ensure maximum utilisation of available equipment.
He also assessed issues affecting mining operations, including machinery deployment, relocation of encroachers and the proposed expansion of the project.
The CMD emphasised the need for coordinated action by regional officials and field-level teams to remove operational constraints and improve production efficiency.
Time-Bound Action Plan for Dewatering
Addressing the persistent waterlogging in the Kantapahari Patch and the departmental patch, Agarwal directed the General Manager (E&M) and field engineers to prepare a time-bound action plan for expediting dewatering operations.
He also called for measures to strengthen the jhoras and river embankments affecting the mining patches to prevent water seepage and minimise disruptions to mining activities.
The directions assume significance as waterlogging can restrict access to coal reserves, impede machinery deployment and affect production operations.
Rehabilitation and Additional Machinery at Higher Patch
At the Higher Patch, the CMD reviewed the ongoing relocation of project-affected families and directed regional officials to extend all possible logistical assistance to the families during the relocation process.
He also instructed the contractor’s representative to immediately increase the number of shovels and deploy an adequate number of dumpers to strengthen excavation and coal-handling operations.
ASGKC Colliery Operator Asked to Strengthen Operations
Agarwal subsequently inspected the opencast patch of ASGKC Colliery, operated by RK Mining under the Mine Developer-cum-Operator (MDO) model on a revenue-sharing basis.
During the inspection, he directed the mine operator to increase the number of machines without delay, ensure adequate lighting and put proper firefighting arrangements in place.
The directions underscored the need to improve operational readiness while maintaining essential safety provisions at the mine.
Focus on Production Growth and Safety
BCCL has been conducting regular inspections of its operational areas under Agarwal’s leadership to identify bottlenecks, improve resource utilisation and accelerate coal production.
At the conclusion of the inspection, the CMD urged the Katras regional team and mine officials to work collectively towards increasing coal production and dispatch to support the country’s energy requirements.
He also stressed that efforts to enhance production must be accompanied by strict adherence to prescribed safety standards.
The inspection highlighted BCCL management’s focus on improving equipment utilisation, resolving waterlogging issues, strengthening contractor performance and addressing infrastructure constraints to sustain mining operations in the Katras area.
