NTPC Adds 100 MW Solar Power at Ramagundam, Total Group Capacity Climbs to 89,805 MW
This is among NTPC’s key renewable assets in southern India and further strengthens the utility’s non-fossil generation portfolio

State-run power giant NTPC Limited has further accelerated its green energy transition by declaring the commercial operation of 100 MW solar capacity at its 176 MW Solar PV Project in Ramagundam, Telangana, effective from 00:00 hours on May 2, 2026. The commissioning has been formally intimated to stock exchanges under SEBI’s Listing Obligations and Disclosure Requirements.
The fresh renewable capacity addition has pushed NTPC Group’s total installed capacity to 89,805 MW, while its commercial capacity has risen to 88,725 MW, underlining the PSU major’s aggressive march toward clean energy diversification.
Partial COD Declared in 176 MW Telangana Solar Project
The Ramagundam Solar PV Project, with a planned aggregate capacity of 176 MW, has now achieved commercial declaration for its first 100 MW block, allowing NTPC to begin power generation and revenue realization from the commissioned portion while work continues on the balance capacity.
Located within NTPC’s Ramagundam energy complex in Telangana, the project is part of the company’s broader strategy to repurpose existing thermal ecosystems into multi-source energy hubs combining coal, solar, floating solar and future storage solutions.
This is among NTPC’s key renewable assets in southern India and further strengthens the utility’s non-fossil generation portfolio.
Ramagundam Emerging as NTPC’s Renewable Growth Hub
Ramagundam has steadily evolved into one of NTPC’s flagship green energy destinations. The station already hosts one of India’s major floating solar installations, and the newly declared 100 MW commercial operation marks another step in transforming the thermal power township into a diversified renewable generation centre.
Industry observers say the phased commissioning model enables NTPC to monetize completed assets faster while ensuring project timelines remain aligned with grid readiness and evacuation infrastructure.
Boost to NTPC’s Green Energy Ambitions
The latest declaration comes at a time when NTPC is rapidly scaling up solar, wind, hybrid and pumped hydro projects across the country as part of its long-term ambition to become a dominant player in India’s energy transition.
While NTPC continues to remain the backbone of India’s baseload thermal generation, the PSU has sharply increased capital deployment into renewable assets to align with national decarbonisation targets and future energy demand patterns.
The Ramagundam addition is therefore not merely a routine capacity increment, but another visible signal of NTPC’s calibrated shift from a coal-centric generator to an integrated energy conglomerate.
With this commissioning, NTPC continues to consolidate its position not just as India’s largest power producer, but also as one of the country’s fastest expanding public sector renewable energy developers.
