Uttar Pradesh May Face Power Crisis as Nine Generating Units Go Offline; Output Drops Drastically

Storms and technical faults force shutdown of nine generating units across six locations, while falling demand helps avert immediate supply disruptions

Uttar Pradesh may face a power shortage as nine generating units of the Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam (UPRVUNL) have gone offline simultaneously, leading to a sharp decline in electricity generation. Power production has fallen by 3,373 MW in just four days, from 7,106 MW on May 25 to 3,733 MW on May 29.

According to officials, the outages have been caused by technical faults in power plants and transmission systems triggered by recent storms and heavy rainfall across parts of the state. Repair teams are working round the clock to restore operations.

UPRVUNL operates 25 generating units across six locations with a combined installed capacity of over 13,000 MW. While the state government has been focusing on enhancing generation capacity, the sudden shutdown of nine units has significantly impacted power production.

The affected units include Anpara Unit-2, Ghatampur Unit-2, Harduaganj Unit-7, Jawaharpur Unit-2, Obra Unit-9, and Parichha Units 3, 4, 5 and 6.

Decline in Power Generation

  • May 25: 7,106 MW
  • May 26: 6,224 MW
  • May 27: 6,125 MW
  • May 28: 5,440 MW
  • May 29: 3,733 MW

Power Demand Also Declines

Fortunately, electricity demand has also eased due to the prevailing weather conditions, helping the state avoid major supply disruptions.

  • May 24: 31,825 MW
  • May 25: 30,853 MW
  • May 26: 28,125 MW
  • May 27: 30,337 MW
  • May 28: 30,607 MW
  • May 29: 29,010 MW (till evening)

Officials noted that had demand remained at peak summer levels, consumers could have faced significant power shortages.

“Power generation at several units has been affected due to storms and rainfall in the Bundelkhand region. Our teams are working on restoring operations, and we expect all affected units to resume generation at full capacity within the next one to two days,” said Mayur Maheshwari, Managing Director, Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam.
