Indian Oil Adapts to Middle East Disruptions, Secures Red Sea Oil Cargoes
Energy imports into India continuing through non-Hormuz routes, says Hardeep Singh Puri

Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), India’s largest oil refiner, has secured crude oil cargoes from the Red Sea port of Yanbu as the country adjusts to disruptions in global energy supply triggered by escalating tensions in the Middle East.
The move comes amid the ongoing geopolitical conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran, which has raised concerns about oil shipments through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. To mitigate risks, Saudi Arabia has increased crude shipments from its Red Sea port of Yanbu, offering an alternative supply route for major importers like India.
Industry sources indicate that Indian refiners, including Indian Oil Corporation Limited, have begun diversifying procurement strategies to ensure uninterrupted energy supplies. The shift to Red Sea shipments is part of a broader effort to reduce dependence on routes that may be affected by regional tensions.
At the same time, Indian energy companies are evaluating offers of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Russia. Moscow is seeking to redirect LNG supplies from Europe to Asian markets such as India and China amid ongoing geopolitical realignments.
India has also expanded its engagement with Russian crude markets, taking advantage of international waivers that allow the purchase of certain categories of Russian oil despite Western sanctions.
Despite global supply pressures, the government has indicated that domestic retail fuel prices will remain stable for now. Officials say that India’s strategic fuel reserves and diversified sourcing strategies have helped maintain supply stability.
Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri said India continues to manage the “energy trilemma” of availability, affordability and sustainability even amid global geopolitical uncertainties.
“Energy imports into the country are in full flow from all non-Hormuz routes. The energy requirements of our citizens are being fully met. India is in a comfortable position and there is no room for anxiety or speculation in this regard,” the minister said.
The developments highlight India’s efforts to strengthen energy security by diversifying supply routes and sourcing strategies in an increasingly volatile global energy landscape.
