MoD & BEL Sign ₹1,950 Crore Contract for Mountain Radars for IAF

These advanced radar systems are specifically designed for deployment in high-altitude and mountainous terrains, significantly enhancing surveillance capabilities in challenging environments

In a significant boost to India’s indigenous defence capabilities under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make-in-India initiatives, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has signed a major capital acquisition contract with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) for the procurement of two Mountain Radars for the Indian Air Force (IAF).

The contract, valued at approximately ₹1,950 crore, falls under the ‘Buy (Indian–Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured)’ category. It was signed in New Delhi on March 31, 2026, in the presence of senior officials from MoD and BEL.

The Mountain Radar system has been indigenously designed and developed by the Electronics and Radar Development Establishment under the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), and will be manufactured by BEL.

These advanced radar systems are specifically designed for deployment in high-altitude and mountainous terrains, significantly enhancing surveillance capabilities in challenging environments. Once installed and commissioned, the radars will provide a major boost to India’s air defence preparedness and strengthen overall national security.

The procurement also marks another step towards reducing dependence on foreign-origin defence equipment, while promoting domestic manufacturing and technological self-reliance in the defence sector.
