NHPC Declares Commercial Operation of Fifth 250 MW Unit at Subansiri Lower Project
Five Units Now Operational, Taking Project Capacity to 1,250 MW

NHPC Limited has declared the commercial operation of the fifth 250 MW unit of its 2,000 MW Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project, marking another milestone in the commissioning of the country’s major hydropower project.
The commercial operation date (CoD) of Unit 5 will take effect from 00:00 hours on October 23, 2026, according to the company’s regulatory filing.
With this declaration, five of the project’s eight units, each with an installed capacity of 250 MW, have achieved commercial operation. The total commercially operational capacity has now increased to 1,250 MW out of the project’s planned 2,000 MW.
Three Units Remain to Be Commissioned
Located on the Subansiri River along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border, the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project is a flagship hydropower undertaking of NHPC.
The project comprises eight generating units of 250 MW each. NHPC has stated that the commercial operation dates of the remaining three units will be communicated in due course.
Once fully commissioned, the project is expected to significantly strengthen India’s renewable power generation capacity and support electricity supply in the Northeast and other beneficiary regions.
The addition of Unit 5 represents further progress towards the full commissioning of the 2,000 MW project, which is expected to play an important role in meeting the country’s growing electricity demand through hydropower.
The declaration has been made in compliance with Regulation 30 of the SEBI (Listing Obligations and Disclosure Requirements) Regulations, 2015.
