GRSE Launches Next-Gen OPV “Sanghmitra”: Crafted for Vigilance, Built for Victory

The Kolkata-based defence PSU is currently building four such advanced vessels for the Indian Navy

In a significant boost to India’s maritime capabilities, Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd (GRSE) marked another milestone on May 20, 2026, with the launch of its first Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel (NGOPV), “Sanghmitra.” The Kolkata-based defence PSU is currently building four such advanced vessels for the Indian Navy.

The warship was ceremonially launched by Smt. Sarita Vatsayan, in the presence of Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan, who attended as the Chief Guest. The occasion was marked by traditional rituals and Vedic chants, underscoring India’s maritime heritage blended with modern naval advancement.

Symbolism Behind “Sanghmitra”

The name Sanghmitra, meaning “friend of the community,” carries deep historical resonance. It is inspired by the daughter of Emperor Ashoka, who journeyed to Sri Lanka in the 3rd century BC to spread the teachings of Gautama Buddha—symbolizing outreach, peace, and cooperation.

A Powerful Leap in Naval Capability

The NGOPVs represent a significant upgrade over earlier Offshore Patrol Vessels, combining endurance, versatility, and enhanced combat readiness:

  • Length: ~113 metres
  • Beam: 14.6 metres
  • Displacement: ~3,000 tonnes
  • Top Speed: 23 knots
  • Endurance: 8,500 nautical miles at 14 knots

These specifications position the NGOPVs as formidable platforms for extended maritime operations across diverse mission profiles.

Multi-Role Operational Excellence

Designed for operational flexibility, the NGOPVs will undertake a wide spectrum of missions:

  • Coastal and offshore asset protection
  • Maritime interdiction & VBSS (Visit, Board, Search & Seizure)
  • Surveillance and mine warfare support
  • Anti-piracy and counter-infiltration operations
  • Non-combatant evacuation and convoy escort missions
  • Humanitarian assistance & disaster relief (HADR)
  • Search and rescue operations

With a shallow draught of just 4 metres, these vessels can operate effectively in coastal and littoral waters—critical for India’s maritime security architecture.

GRSE’s Proven Shipbuilding Excellence

GRSE continues to reinforce its reputation as a premier warship builder. Notably, it delivered eight ships in a single year, including the simultaneous commissioning of three different classes—such as the P17A stealth frigate—on March 30, 2026.

The shipyard has also made history in exports, delivering MCGS Barracuda to Mauritius in 2014—India’s first exported warship, which earned the Defence Minister’s Award of Excellence for in-house design.

Leadership Speaks

Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan praised GRSE’s consistent performance: “The Indian Navy has evolved into a force that is not only prepared for conflicts but equally committed to shaping a stable maritime environment… Today’s launch adds another important chapter to GRSE’s legacy.”

Cmde P.R. Hari (Retd.), Chairman & Managing Director of GRSE, highlighted the momentum: “We are kickstarting 2026–27 with this launch, and the year will witness multiple launches and deliveries.”

Strategic Significance

The NGOPV program aligns with India’s broader push for Aatmanirbhar Bharat in defence manufacturing and strengthens the Navy’s ability to secure sea lanes, protect national interests, and respond swiftly to regional and global contingencies.

With “Sanghmitra” now in the water, GRSE has once again demonstrated its engineering prowess and commitment to powering India’s maritime future.
